The Central Visayas showcased the best and the brightest inventions and researchers in the region through the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE) on 25-27 August 2021 in conjunction with the National Science and Technology Week in Region VII.
Conducted via the virtual platform, the 2021 RICE recognizes the contributions of inventions and innovation as key components for national development.
The Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits was conducted on 25-27 August 2021 in Region VII: Central Visayas
It also serves as the preliminary round to the National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) in 2022 where regional winners compete again for a national title, cash prizes, and plaques of recognition.
“RICE has touched and changed the many lives of our Filipino inventors from a budding inventor to a household name in their chosen industry, since its inception,” said DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña during his opening remarks.
Vermitea Foliar Fertilizer led the pack of winners in Region VII, having announced as regional winner of the Unlad Award for Outstanding Utility Model and brought home Php 25,000.00 cash prize.

Unlad Award for Outstanding Utility Model
- First Prize Winner: Vermitea Foliar Fertilizer by Melanie R. Sarong, Joyful John E. Torreon, and Jose T. Travero
- Second Prize Winner: A Mathematical Kit for Teaching Fractions by Gamaliel G. Gonzales
Banghay Award for Industrial Design
- First Prize Winner: Submerged Plastic Fish Cage by Ralph A. Cabrera
Sibol Award for Outstanding High School Student Creative Research
- First Prize Winner: Bioplastic Film Made from Discarded Fish Scales of Mol-Mol (Parrot Fish) by John Niño M. Ornopia
The next RICE will feature the outstanding inventions and researches in Region VI-A: CALABARZON on 27-29 September 2021.
