The Science for the People in SM Supermalls concluded the first leg of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) exhibit in SM Megamall, which ran from 03-07 October 2021.

The exhibit is a joint collaboration of DOST and SM Supermalls to showcase the technologies, research results, and programs of assistance of the Department and partner agencies closer to the public.

The first leg of the Science for the People in SM Supermalls was conducted on 03-07 October 2021 in SM Megamall

Launched in September 2021, the collaboration is a follow through activity of the DOST at 60 in SM Supermalls in 2018 when both DOST and SM Supermalls celebrated their diamond anniversary.

Organized by the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI), the exhibit in SM Megamall brought 25 DOST technologies and services, such as the hybrid electric road train, ReWear facemask, Philippine tropical fibers, and bamboo-framed face shield.

Technologies for the People

The exhibit also carried some of the most relevant technologies assisted and funded by the Department.

The Multi-Shell Neutron Spectrometer is an instrument that can measure the energy distribution and can be used in radiation protection practices.

Meanwhile, the New Hyaluronic Acid-Based Hydrogels are hydrogels that can be used as biomaterial for eye injuries, nasal defects, skin wounds, and slow release of drugs.

It can also be used in preventing adhesions after surgery and blocking abnormal urine flow in the body.

Moreover, Charging in Minutes (Charm) is a fast-charging system that can fully charge electric tricycles in 30 minutes.

Programs of Assistance for the People

DOST services through the programs of assistance were also featured to advocate people in pursuing their scientific and technological endeavors.

The Young Innovators' Program is an initiative of the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) to provide funding to students who want to pursue an innovative work leading to quality research paper, publication or product and invention.

Also, the Nulab Bus is a science bus primarily intended for senior high school students to promote advanced science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) topics, such as nanotechnology, aerospace engineering, nuclear science, earthquake risk analysis, science media literacy, programming, oceanography, robotics, entomology, and environmental science.

The physical exhibit in SM Megamall was also simultaneously conducted online via the Science for the People in SM Supermalls virtual platform.

The second leg of the series of exhibits is on 11-17 October 2021 in SM North EDSA.
