Philippines hosts the 2018 Technology Transfer Forum

Strengthening the science-industry link is the core path for technology transfer and commercialization.

With the passage of Republic Act (RA) 10055 or the Philippine Technology Transfer Act of 2009, several programs and policies have been implemented by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in supporting a more proactive and responsive technology transfer system.

Such programs include the intellectual property (IP) policy, technology transfer protocol, fairness opinion board report guidelines, and IP management protocols, to name a few.

In line with this, the Department has also been ensuring the market-readiness of local technologies by providing necessary support in pre-commercialization from research and development (R&D) breakthroughs.

The Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) has been instrumental in the fulfillment of the Philippine government’s promise to turn science and technology (S&T) into tangible and practical actions Filipino entrepreneurs can benefit from.

“Technology developers has given the opportunity to market their technologies to possible investors in the country,” said DOST-TAPI Director Edgar I. Garcia.

This year, DOST-TAPI will organize a Technology Transfer Forum in Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu on 16 October.

The forum is one of the seven side forums DOST has proposed to organize during the 17th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Ministerial Meeting on S&T 20 October 2017 in Myanmar.

During the forum, Mr. Eugene Wee of Singapore, Dr. Viraj Perera of Malaysia, and Dr. Danilo Largo of the Philippines are expected to present topics on technology matching, issues and concerns on technology transfer and commercialization, and best practices on technology transfer and commercialization, respectively.

Moreover, the sessions hope to acquire insights from international speakers on bringing technologies in the market and planning innovative strategies in technology adoption, and overcoming different challenges relating to technology transfer and commercialization.

More than a venue for technical experts, researchers, and policy makers to share their best practices and ideas for future collaborations, the forum spearheads the creation of policy recommendations on technology transfer in the ASEAN.
