In the latest installment of the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE) in Ilocos and Eastern Visayas, new inventors and innovators rose up to the task of developing new ideas for the community in the virtual event held on 27-29 October 2021 and 10-12 November 2021, respectively.

RICE reveals the winners in Ilocos and Eastern Visayas on 27-29 October 2021 and 10-12 November 2021, respectively

Conducted by the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) and Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Offices I and VIII, the regions’ scientific community decided their tickets for the National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) in 2022.

RICE recognizes the indispensability and contribution of innovations to national development through a form of competition for outstanding invention, utility model, industrial design, and creative research categories.

Ilocos’ Innovative Minds

In his opening remarks, DOST-I Regional Director Armando Q. Banal noted the inventors and innovators fervor to develop new ideas despite the on-going coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

While DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Sancho A. Maborang expressed his appreciation and recognition to Ilocos’ scientific community.

“Innovation moves science, technology, and mankind forward and this is the highest reward an inventor can receive,” stated Usec. Maborang.

The following winners were announced as the most inventive and innovative in Region I:

Unlad Award for Outstanding Utility Model

  1. First Prize: Multi-Fuel Dryer by Zaldy A. Fernandez
  2. Second Prize: The Process of Making RICE Straw Geotextile Net by Rolando P. Javellonar

Likha Award for Outstanding Creative Research

  1. First Prize: Optimization of Mung Bean Milk-Based Mango Beverage by Charissa M. De Vera, Felcris Z. Dy, Meryl A. Bernardino, and Cyril John A. Domingo
  2. Second Prize: Baked Glutinous Rice Cake (Tupig) and Preparation Thereof by Veronica Austria, Raquel C. Pambid, Wilma M. De Vera, and Cyril John

Sibol Award for Outstanding College Student Creative Research

  1. Second Prize: Process of Volvariella Mushroom Production in Multi-Bed Chamber by Christian Corpuz and Heizelle Corpuz

Sibol Award for Outstanding High School Student Creative Research

  1. First Prize: The Hematopoietic Effects of Platito (Nothopanax scutellarium) Ethanolic Leaf Extract in Phenylhydrazine-induced Mice (Mus musculus) by Kathlyn O. Salanio
  2. Second Prize: The Effect of Chitosan Derived from Mud Crab (Scylla olivacea) Shell in Controlling Rice Blast Fungus (Magnaporthe oryzae) in Vitro by Rose-mel Xiamane S. Dayoan and Jacob Filippe G. Galzote
  3. Third Prize: The Production, Characterization, and Potential of Ngalog (Portulaca oleracea) as Natural Sweetener by James Philip P. Ines

Eastern Visayas’ Victory

Meanwhile a few weeks later, the RICE in Region VIII conducted a search for the best and brightest inventions and research in Eastern Visayas.

“[Eastern Visayas] is capable of producing useful innovation which could either relay a product or process improvement,” said DOST-VIII Regional Director, Engr. Ernesto M. Granada.

He added that there is an increasing interest among inventors, innovators, and students from the region to discover new ideas which could improve the way we live.

DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña also sent his regards through his keynote message where he emphasized on the importance of finding innovative minds in the region to further nation building.

“May we continue to inspire more innovative minds in searching for the best Filipino invention there is in this land,” said Secretary de la Peña.

The following took home the bacon in Region VIII:

Tukas Award for Outstanding Invention

  1. Third Prize: Improvised Touch Remote Switch for Electrical Loads by Engr. Jeff L. Homeres

Unlad Award for Outstanding Utility Model

  1. First Prize: Portable Vacuum Fryer by Dr. Daniel Leslie S. Tan, Benjamin L.Cinto, and Mark Anthony R. Atanacio
  2. Second Prize: Composition of Sauce from Coconut Water by Minerva B. Baclayon

Likha Award for Outstanding Creative Research

  1. First Prize: Smart Edubox by Engr. Jon Alvin L. Macariola
  2. Second Prize: Wound Healing Ointment from Green Mussel (Perna viridis) Byssus by Julie Ann A. Arcales, Engr. Harold O. Panganoron, and Gladys Colandog
  3. Third Prize: Use of Poly-beta Hydroxybutyrate as Housing to Homogenize Growth and Increase Survival of Crustaceans in Aquaculture Systems by Dr. Gladys L. Pascual

Sibol Award for Outstanding College Student Creative Research

  1. First Prize: Navigation Tool Using 3D Sound for Blind by Jodel L. Mahinay, Ronico P. Salva, and Mel Francis G. Separa
  2. Second Prize: A Food Seasoning and the Preparation Thereof by March Tresha P. Morano, Jolina S. Ladan, Emelos G. Ganoza, and Grace V. Dela Cruz
  3. Third Prize: Mud Crab Locator Equipment System by Richard J. Fabriag, Mark Glyvan Albos, and Marlou Nablo

The next RICE will be held in Zamboanga Peninsula on 01-03 December 2021 and in Cagayan Valley on 14-16 December 2021.
