Assistance to inventors retold in Inventors’ Forum

To create a venue to tackle available assistance to local inventors, the Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI) organized an Inventors’ Forum on the Policies and Guidelines on the Implementation of Assistance to Inventors on 02 October 2019 at the Heritage Hotel Manila, Pasay City.

“I would like to extend that the significance of inventions and innovations are key components in creating a sustainable development not only in the economic aspect of our nation but also in social advancements of the communities,” said DOST-TAPI Director Edgar I. Garcia during the welcome remarks.

He further emphasized that the Institute has always believed in the potentials of Filipino inventors in becoming the game-changers and global leaders in innovation, providing hope and inspiration to the millions of people especially to the youth.

The forum has tackled topics on data privacy, programs of assistance among inventors, and financing mechanisms for technology-based inventions of startups and small and medium entrepreneurs (SME).

“Our programs were made due to the steep filing found by our inventors,” said Atty. Mary Grace Cruz-Yap Director of the Documentation, Information, and Technology Transfer Bureau of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL).

Ms. Elizabeth I. Garcia, Senior Science Research Specialist of DOST-TAPI, presented the flagship programs of the Institute which are available to Filipino inventors.

“We have created programs in relation to the protection of intellectual property rights, developmet for industry-based inventions for inventors, provision of venture financing for businesses, and conduct of promotional activities for eventual transfer of technologies,” said Garcia.

The Innovation and Technology (I-TECH) Lending Program, in partnership with DOST-TAPI and Land Bank of the Philippines (LANDBANK), finances and guarantees loan assistance of any Filipino invention.

“We encourage borrowers to avail this assistance because we have the money however, nobody is keen on taking advantage of the lending program,” said Mr. Generoso David, Department Manager of the LANDBANK.

The inventors’ forum was attended by at least 120 participants from private companies, inventors’ organizations, and government sectors.
