Bicutan, Taguig City– The Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI) hosted a Gender and Development (GAD) Webinar for Gender Fair Communication in celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science last February 21.

Virtual participants from DOST attached agencies and regional offices of Gender and Development (GAD) Webinar for Gender Fair Communication in celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science last February 21.

The event was attended by DOST attached agencies, regional offices, TAPI employees and on-the-job trainees from Taguig City University via face-to-face and Zoom. 

DOST-TAPI Director Atty. Marion Ivy D. Decena, in her opening remarks, highlighted the importance of recognizing the role of women and girls in science, not only as beneficiaries but also as agents of change.

“As we contend that women are active agents of development, not just passive recipients of development, may we become a temple of respecting human rights, and supporting self-determination and actualization of human potential for the next generations to come”, Atty. Decena said.

Cavite State University Professor and GAD advocate King David Agreda discussing gender issues and GAD advocacies.

The webinar featured Cavite State University Professor King David Agreda and UP Institute of Biology Molecular Biologist Lorraine Joyce Del Rosario as resource speakers.

Professor Agreda, a GAD advocate, discussed gender issues and highlighted the importance of the Magna Carta for Women's mandate.

He also delved into concepts of equality and equity among genders and the marginalized sectors of the community, which are the main advocacies of GAD.

UP Institute of Biology Molecular Biologist Lorraine Joyce Del Rosario, sharing her experience as a woman in the field of Science. 

Meanwhile, Del Rosario shared her journey as a woman in the field of science and the significant contributions of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

She also talked about breaking the gender barrier in these fields and encouraged young women to pursue their passion for science.

The participants also had the opportunity to watch the movie "Hidden Figures," which tells the true story of three African-American women who played a crucial role in NASA's space program in the 1960s. 

Overall, the Gender and Development (GAD) Webinar for Gender Fair Communication provided an avenue for DOST-TAPI to continue its advocacy in shedding light on the ways society assigns roles, responsibilities, and expectations to both women and men.
