RICE NCR, Caraga awards lamp primer and veterinary medical table as outstanding inventions for 2017


The Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE) recently concluded the awarding of inventors who have outstanding inventions, utility models, industrial designs, creative researches, and student creative researches for 2017.

RICE, one of the leading programs of the Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI), is a nationwide activity conducted in different regions of the Philippines recognizing the indispensability of the Filipino inventor for national economic development.

The invention contest provides encouragement to inventors in using their inventive capability by competing for cash rewards, certificates, plaques, and bragging rights.

Secretary Fortunato T. De La Peña, Director Alfonso P. Alamban of DOST-X, and Director Edgar I. Garcia of DOST-TAPI present the certificates to the RICE winners on 21 September 2017 in Limketkai Atrium, Cagayan de Oro City

Inventors may qualify in one of five categories, namely:

“As a stepping stone for inventors, RICE helps inventors in reaching their full potential and gaining confidence to maneuver their inventions to the market and eventually transform to a sustainable science-based entrepreneurship,” said Director Edgar I. Garcia of DOST-TAPI during the Closing Ceremonies of RICE.

For 2017, the “Lamp Primers for White Spot Syndrome Virus” invented by Mary Beth B. Maningas and the “Veterinary Medical Table” invented by Aurora A. El-Estwani bagged the coveted Tuklas Award or the Outstanding Invention Award in the National Capital Region (NCR) and Caraga Region, respectively.

RICE was conducted across all DOST Regional Offices which started on 3-5 July 2017 in DOST-XI at NCCC Mall, Davao City and concluded simultaneously on 14-18 November 2017 in DOST-I, DOST-II, and DOST-IX at Robinsons Mall in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, Isabela State University in Cauayan City, Isabela, and Limketkai Atrium in Cagayan de Oro City, respectively.

Winners from each category serve as qualifiers for the National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) to be awarded during the 2018 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW).
