Recognizing the need to ensure the commercialization and utilization of technologies supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) steered the implementation of the DOST 500 Project.

DOST 500 or the "Support to the Commercialization of 500 DOST-Generated Technologies and Strengthening the Country's Intellectual Property (IP) and Technology Portfolios" has boosted the IP protection and technology transfer ecosystems in the country.

Developed through the DOST 500 Project, this model was copyrighted and was assigned to DOST-TAPI by Caezar Angelito E. Arceo

The project, crafted in line with DOST-TAPI's mandated functions, has enriched the country's overall innovation system.

A major part of DOST 500 is the introduction of an ideal technology transfer pathway which paved the way for DOST-TAPI to improve its services on IP protection and commercialization.

Ultimately, this aided in streamlining the process in which DOST-supported researches and technologies are brought to public and commercial use.

Since the project's implementation in 2016, DOST-TAPI facilitated major activities which cover the whole process of technology transfer - from conceptualization to licensing.

A segment of DOST 500 has aided in filing patent, utility model, industrial design, and copyright applications.

This has led to a significant increase in the annual IP filings of DOST-TAPI from a total of 120 in 2015 to 911 in 2018.

With this milestone, DOST-TAPI was driven to aim yearly managing of as much as 1000 IP applications from the portfolio of the Department.

Also, DOST-TAPI has deployed in-house and licensed patent agents to identify and audit IPs all over the country, especially those funded by DOST.

Meanwhile, in terms of commercialization, the Institute has implemented support services such as generating freedom-to-operate analyses, IP valuations, fairness opinion reports, and written recommendations, which are crucial requirements to ensure a seamless transfer and commercialization of DOST technologies.

With the project's closing in June 2021, its near five-year implementation has clinched significant success in ensuring that DOST-generated technologies are equipped with vital IP protection and are smoothly delivered to the target end-users, further promoting and accelerating the system of technology transfer and commercialization in the country.
