Bicutan, Taguig City—The Technology Application and Promotion Institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI) will celebrate its thirty-eighth anniversary on January 30, 2025, with the theme “Teamwork in Action, Excellence in Motion.”  It will also debut its 2024 Annual Report, “Salimbay: Soaring High, Reaching Far: DOST-TAPI’s Unstoppable Journey on Innovation and Global Impact,” which chronicles DOST-TAPI’s remarkable journey in innovation and achieving global excellence.

2023 DOST-TAPI’s Annual Report entitled “Layag” is a symbol of progress and determination, and will continue to guide us, representing DOST-TAPI's voyage across international borders. Salimbay delves into the organization's successful international ventures, showcasing partnerships with global organizations, and the impact of Filipino innovations on the world stage.  It will also explore future opportunities for international collaboration, positioning DOST-TAPI as a key player in the global innovation ecosystem.

“Ang paglipad ay nagsisimula sa unang pakpak ng hangin,” says Atty. Marion Ivy D. Decena, CESO III, Director of DOST-TAPI. “This perfectly encapsulates our journey, from the humble beginnings of the institute, we have steadily grown rooted in the commitment to empower Filipino inventors, innovators, scientists, and researchers, and elevate the country through the power of innovation, technology, and science”.

DOST-TAPI’s 2024 Achievements and Highlights

From Geneva to Seoul: Filipino Inventors Achieve Global Recognition

This 2024, DOST-TAPI has successfully gained global recognition in innovation through its impressive showings at international events and competitions.  At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 in Las Vegas, the Philippine Pavilion attracted one hundred and five (105) visitors, resulting in seven (7) established international partnerships, eleven (11) successful business visits, and twenty-one (21) valuable linkages.

This was then followed by the 49th International Exhibition of Invention in Geneva (IEIG), where Filipino inventors garnered four (4) silver awards and five (5) bronze awards.

Although it happened virtually, the delegation of Filipino women inventors shone at the Korea International Women’s Invention Exposition (KIWIE), garnering two (2) gold awards, two (2) silver awards, and five (5) bronze awards.

While the WorldInvent Singapore (WoSG) took place in July 2024, we witnessed a golden performance, with three (3) gold awards and three (3) silver awards.

Lastly, the DOST delegation showcased Filipino ingenuity at the Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF) where our local inventors, innovators, and scientists brought home three (3) gold awards, three (3) silver awards, four (4) bronze awards, and an impressive number of fifteen (15) special awards.

Building a Stronger Future: DOST-TAPI’s Role in the Nation’s Innovation

As DOST-TAPI continues its mission internationally, the agency also continues to nurture the vibrant innovation ecosystem here in the Philippines.  The National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) and the Invent School Program provided a platform for aspiring inventors, inspiring and empowering the next generation of innovators.

For the first time in history, the NICE Awards winners for the year 2024 were recognized by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of the Philippines, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.

Furthermore, programs like Venture Financing Program, GALING, TECHNiCOM, and HIRANG 2.0 through the Further Forward Campaign, provided crucial support to Filipino inventors and entrepreneurs, helping them transform their innovative ideas into tangible products and services that address local needs and contribute to the nation’s ecosystem.

This leads to the second conduct of the Lunduyan: A Culminating Event for the DOST-TAPI’s Approved Invention and Innovation Projects and, at the same time, the Gawad Alunig x Dalumat (GAxD) awarding ceremonies.  Lunduyan served as a platform to showcase the remarkable achievements of Filipino inventors and startups whose projects received funding and support from DOST-TAPI, while GAxD, an award recognizing excellence in science journalism that honored outstanding individuals who have contributed to the advancement of science and technology awareness and communication in the Philippines.

Recognition towards Excellence

Aside from these, DOST-TAPI’s commitment to excellence was further validated by prestigious awards, including the 20th Philippine Quill Awards, 59th Anvil Awards, and 2024 Marketing Excellence Awards.  The institute also navigated the Performance Governance System (PGS) Initiation Stage, earning the prestigious Silver Trailblazer Award - these accolades recognized DOST-TAPI’s effective communication strategies, impactful public service initiatives, and successful campaigns in promoting innovation while inspiring the Filipino community.

Filipino Innovation Soaring High with DOST-TAPI’s Roadmap 2024-2032

DOST-TAPI has charted a bold course for the future, laying out a 10-year Roadmap in 2022 and institutionalizing the “march-in of technologies” in 2024.  This is a crucial step that ensures early-stage support for DOST-generated innovations, emphasizing international partnerships, IP protection, and market research to boost their global impact.

2025: PLAYING AN ESSENTIAL ROLE IN THE INNOVATION SYSTEM

In 2025, we will implement a strong due diligence framework to support the global commercialization of DOST-developed technologies, ensuring both defensive and offensive protection of IP assets internationally.  Our approach includes providing commercialization support to organizations or institutions without dedicated technology transfer and development offices.  We will also focus on business modeling and certification processes to facilitate international licensing.  Additionally, we aim to introduce a customer-client engagement initiative that highlights IP policy and commercialization support.

2026: CONNECTING FILIPINO TECHNOLOGIES TO GLOBAL MARKETS

By 2026, our goal is to strengthen the global reach of Filipino technologies.  This will involve developing international IP strategies, organizing business summits for local and international beneficiaries and investors, and expanding platforms to showcase technology and product offerings.

2027: EXPANDING FOREIGN PARTNERSHIPS AND MARKET REACH

In 2027, we aim to significantly enhance our foreign partnerships. With adequate funding, we plan to establish regional and international hubs to support the entry of more DOST technologies into global markets, complemented by comprehensive marketing and promotional efforts.  This strategy seeks to attract foreign investors, drive economic growth, create job opportunities, and promote technology transfer.

2028-2032: DOMINATING GLOBAL EXPANSION ACTIVITIES

For the next five years, DOST-TAPI will emerge as a prominent player, gaining global recognition for its consistent efforts over the years.  Our goal is to transform into a self-sustaining institute that delivers niche services to support local research and development, engage in emerging ventures, and create both local and global opportunities while generating revenue.

Alongside this vision, we proposed the DOST Internationalization Program, designed to help DOST-funded and developed technologies meet international standards, enter global markets, and drive economic growth through innovation and self-sustainability.

Unstoppable Commitment to Public Service

As DOST-TAPI celebrates its 38th Anniversary with the theme: “Teamwork in Action, Excellence in Motion,” it reflects on a year of remarkable achievements.  From international triumphs to the local innovation ecosystem, the institute’s success hinges on the collaborative efforts of our local inventors, researchers, scientists, startups, innovators, and the entire DOST-TAPI Team.  This spirit of teamwork fuels the continuous progress that drives the agency’s excellence in all endeavors.
