Beyond academics and athletics, did you know that universities are also home to innovative minds? Whether it be for solving everyday problems or just making our lives a little bit better, here’s a list of innovations that you probably didn’t know came from your alma mater.

Here’s a list of remarkable innovations that have brought pride to their institution. Who knows, you might just be the next innovator to represent your university with a Filipino innovation supported by DOST-TAPI TECHNiCOM.

CharM (Charging in Minutes) - University of the Philippines

Fighting Maroons are leading the charge (pun intended) to electromobility! This University of the Philippines-grown technology by CHRG Electric Vehicle Technologies Inc. introduces CharM (Charging in Minutes)—a locally-developed fast charger for e-trikes and e-jeeps, cutting charging time to just 30 minutes.  Now we have an option for a cleaner and faster transportation energy solution, thanks to our smart and innovative Iskos and Iskas.

Collapsible Solar Power Station for Farms - Batangas State University

Not backing down from sustainable energy solutions, the Red Spartans from Batangas State University under the Project Leadership of Dr. Anton Louise De Ocampo, shone beyond intellect, developing a solar energy solution that is easily transportable and set up for local agricultural activities.  This innovation allows farmers to forge forward with their work without worrying about energy sources.

Solar-Powered Self-Navigating Paddle Wheel Aerator - Southern Leyte State University

As wise and observant as the swift Kingfishers or "talingkaroy," innovators from Southern Leyte State University, led by Project Lead Engr. Jonelle H. Tablada swooped with their solar-powered paddle wheel aerator that keeps fish ponds healthy with its built-in sensors that monitor water quality, and oxygen levels, and automatically adjust conditions making fish farming more efficient and convenient.

Alerto PH - University of Santo Tomas

Just like the mighty Tigers, alert and ready to act, Alerto PH by WiredField Philippines Inc. hailing from the University of Santo Tomas came up with a smart, mobile command center designed for LGUs and DRRMO teams to ensure faster, more effective emergency responses.  This technology helps teams to conduct quick thinking in terms of coordination, real-time decision-making, and field operations, perhaps similar to a certain hunter always ready with no missed opportunities.

Build-Your-Own Tissue Culture (BTC) Lab Kit - De La Salle University

Aiming for greater educational accessibility, the Archers from De La Salle University’s Practical Genomics Laboratory, led by Dr. Ma. Carmen Ablan Lagman, take their shot with an all-in-one "lab in a box."  This portable kit includes essential chemicals, labware, tissue culture media, plant hormones, a gelling agent, and a teacher’s guide. With its impact set to hit the mark, this innovation is poised to benefit various sectors and bring quality education to more Senior High School students.

Smart Low-cost Phototherapy Light System (SLPLS) - Ateneo De Manila University

Swift in pursuit of innovation, the Blue Eagles, led by Mr. Paul Cabacungan from Ateneo de Manila University, introduced a smart monitoring system that improves the treatment of newborn jaundice.  Unlike traditional phototherapy units that rely on electricity, their solar-powered SLPLS is designed for easy assembly and adaptability across various clinical settings. This technology makes it easier to fly in and reach remote communities across the Philippines for better healthcare access for newborns.

Stepping beyond the four walls of the classroom, innovators from these academic institutions bring pride to their alma mater.  Through its pre-commercialization grant with no funding cap, DOST-TAPI’s TECHNiCOM program provides State Universities, Colleges, and Higher Education Institutions with opportunities to further refine their R&D innovations and prepare them for a successful market launch.
