From Kitchen Staple to Global Breakthrough: How DOST-TAPI’s IP Protection program elevated the flavors of the i-SALT Revolution of the DOST-ITDI’s Salt Washer Technology.
Seasoning the Future by Finding Purpose in Innovation
Driven by the mission to enhance the productivity and efficiency of local salt producers, DOST-ITDI, under the leadership of Dr. Annabelle V. Briones, launched the i-SALT Project—a groundbreaking initiative that introduced advanced salt-processing technologies designed for higher efficiency, purity, and sustainability.
At the heart of this project is the Continuous Screw-Type Salt Washer ensuring salt purity of at least 97%, aligning with the standards of R.A. 8172 (ASIN Law) and addressing food safety concerns. This technology helped transform salt production in the regions, making it more cost-effective and accessible year-round.

Preserving the Essence and Understanding Why IP Protection Matters
But innovation alone was not enough—ITDI recognized the importance of protecting their breakthrough. Through DOST-TAPI’s Intellectual Property Rights Assistance Program (IPRAP), they applied for IP protection on October 8, 2019. After a rigorous process, the technology received official intellectual property protection on April 25, 2022.
This milestone was more than just a legal safeguard—it is as symbolic to the technology’s commercial readiness. With stronger IP protection, these technologies became more attractive to local and international partners, adaptors, and licensees, opening doors for large-scale adoption and greater impact on the salt industry.
Adding a Pinch of Prestige with Recognitions that Followed
A testament to the impact of IP protection, during the 2023 NCR ClusteRICE Regional Invention Contest & Exhibits (RICE), both technologies secured the TUKLAS (Outstanding Invention) categories. The momentum continued at the 2024 National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) Presidential Awards, where President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr. personally honored these innovations as among the country’s finest.
With the right vision, even the most familiar things can inspire revolutionary change. From research labs to international acclaim, these salt technologies stand as a testament to the power of Filipino innovation—reshaping industries, improving lives, and setting the stage for future breakthroughs.
