Tacloban City, Leyte – The recently concluded Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE) in Region VIII on 09-11 August 2019 at the Robinsons Place, Tacloban City, Leyte has awarded Ms. Nelissa A. Sudaria the first prize of the Outstanding Utility Model (UM) for her invention, “Process of Producing Edible Fern (Diplazium esculentum) Ice Cream”.
Sudaria who is an Instructor of the Northwest Samar State University (NWSSU) bagged twenty-five thousand pesos and a certificate of recognition from the Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI) and DOST Region VIII, co-organizers of RICE.
The winning UM of Sudaria bested seventeen qualified entries under the category in all of the Eastern Visayas Region.
“We have abundant supply of edible ferns which I believe can be utilized and developed into a product with high market potential in both local and international markets,” explained Sudaria.
Sudaria added that at the early stage of the project, she has encountered problems on standardizing the product formulation until such time she has almost perfected it.
The UM benefits local small-scale ice cream processors by potentially creating employment while supplying the growing demands for locally produced products.
The Outstanding UM is an award given to the outstanding new model of implement or tool or of any industrial product which does not possess the quality of an invention, but which has practical utility by reason of its form, configuration, construction, or composition.
RICE is a nationwide activity conducted in different regions which recognizes the indispensability of the Filipino inventors for national economic development.
Likewise, it serves as the qualifying round for the National Invention Contest and Exhibit (NICE).
Ms. Sudaria’s triumph as the winner for the Outstanding UM in Region VIII advances as a qualifier in the same category for NICE in 2020.
