Moving up: DOST hosts GII Conference in the Philippines

GII Conference

Manila, Philippines – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) will host the Technical Meeting and High-Level Conference on Global Innovation Index (GII) in the Philippines on 17-18 February 2020 at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City.

It was revealed in the recently released GII Report, the Philippines made a very huge leap from 73 in 2018 to 54 to 2019, breaking into the top 55 among 129 participating countries all over the world – an indication of the country’s improvement.

Moreover, it is the first time for the Philippines to be included in the group of innovation achievers due to the remarkable performance in “knowledge diffusion” and “knowledge absorption”.

The GII, published by Cornell University, INSEAD, and the World Intellectual Property Organization, and in partnership with other organizations and institutions, is an annual ranking of countries by their capacity for, and success in, innovation.

It is based on both subjective and objective data derived from several sources, including the International Telecommunication Union, World Bank, and World Economic Forum.

To discuss the future plans in moving-up and sustaining the momentum towards the further improvement of the Philippine ranking in the GII, the technical meeting and high-level conference is created for the key government agencies’ critical role in ensuring and incorporating government approaches.

The event will also provide an overview of the GII’s methodology, data sources and collection including the innovation input, output, and sub-index, as well as capacity building opportunities in data analysis and innovation policy performance.

In close partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the conference is expected to be participated by government officials from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Department of Information and Communications Technology (DITC), Department of Agriculture (DA), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), among others, and international delegates.
