DOST seen as backbone for SME R&D

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is perceived as the backbone of the small and medium entrepreneurs in research and development (R&D).

This was revealed during the #SPICEStoDOSTLabS on 26 February 2020 at the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), DOST Compound, Bicutan, Taguig City.

“With the SMEs’ challenges in submitting the requirements of the government specifically on microbiological analysis of a finished food product and other food safety certifications, DOST through DOST-FNRI is the energizer of small enterprises on product development and laboratory testing,” said Mr. Albert Ros of Edna’s Cakeland.

Ros is one of DOST-FNRI’s clients who attended the #SPICEStoDOSTLabS or the “Strategic Promotion through Integrating Collaboration and Engagement of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) to Support the Technology Transfer and Commercialization of DOST-Developed Technologies including Testing Laboratories and Services”.

Organized by the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI), the event brings together DOST research and development institutes (RDI) and stakeholders for demonstration, orientation, and dissemination of DOST laboratories and services.

“We aim to tap our SMEs in doing R&D with our premier laboratories to fulfill their need to transfer or commercialize their products and technologies,” said DOST-TAPI Director Edgar I. Garcia.

As a series of laboratory visits, #SPICEStoDOSTLabS has visited the laboratories of the Advanced Device and Material Testing Laboratory (ADMATEL) and the Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) in September and October 2019, respectively.

DOST-FNRI laboratories offer state-of-the-art chemical, microbiological, and biochemical analyses of food and functional food, feeds, water quality and safety, and biological samples, that are comparable with the international laboratory standards.

“As we define the Filipino’s nutritional status through the national nutrition survey, development of nutritious and healthy food, and dissemination of nutrition references as guides, we hope that we continue to improve the Philippine nutritional status through our SMEs in the food sector,” said DOST-FNRI Director Mario V. Capanzana.

Touching the accelerated R&D program for capacity building of RDIs through industrial competitiveness component of the Science for Change Program or S4C, the #SPICEStoDOSTLabS promotes improvement in productivity among SMEs as support to economic competitiveness and innovation.

“DOST-FNRI has been a vital part of our success over the years as they provide high-quality service,” said Mr. Johannes Sia of Olsen’s Food Corporation.

Attended by 105 participants, the next in the series is to visit the laboratories of the Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI), Metals Industry Research Development Center (DOST-MIRDC), and Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI).
