As a commitment to promote commercial aptitude among the youth, the Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI) conducted an online orientation among select schools in Region II on 15 February 2021.

In close partnership with DOST Regional Office No. II, the orientation paved the way to introduce the DOST-Academe Technology-Based Enterprise Development (DATBED) Program.

DATBED develops entrepreneurial competencies of students by supporting income-generating projects that are not yet tested in the market, have high market potential, and possess technical viability when commercialized.

Moreover, it aims to shape the future entrepreneurs with their technology-based enterprise through a provision of comprehensive support requirements in doing so, most importantly, financial assistance.

It supports the components in the commercialization pathway from conceptualization with linkages from the academe and industry to implementation through university-government partnership, and marketing with the complete backing from the university, government, and industry.

Composed of two stages, Stage I supports income-generating projects that are not yet tested in the market while Stage II continues to assist DATBED Stage I graduate-beneficiaries for the commercialization of their Stage I projects by providing financial assistance to the DATBED Stage I graduate-beneficiaries who have shown capability in managing the technology-based projects on their own.

“Stage I can offer as much as Php 250,000.00 while Stage II can offer as much as Php 350,000.00 to deserving students who are enrolled in DATBED-accredited schools,” said Mylene A. Alano, DATBED Program Manager.

Subsequently, DATBED Stage II can be a feeder program for the Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) of the DOST Regional Offices.

“The Batanes State College and Saint Dominic College of Batanes are the only tertiary schools in Batanes and I hope that these schools will be accredited under the DATBED Program in 2021,” said Batanes Provincial Science and Technology Director Nora T. Garcia.

DOST-II Assistant Regional Director Teresita A. Tabaog expects the Cagayan State University (CSU)-Sanchez Mira and other CSU campuses to submit their proposals for Stage II implementation.
